About Us

Meals on Wheels of Long Beach
Home Delivered Meals With A “Friendly Visit”

Supporting the independence and well-being
of the homebound, veterans, and disabled since 1971.

Our story

Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) … Nourishes, Comforts and Protects the most vulnerable of Long Beach’s citizens.

On a daily basis, Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) makes a difference.

Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) provides a service of home delivered nutritionally balanced meals for individuals who are unable to shop and cook for themselves and who live alone. Founded in 1971, the program continues with the support of dedicated volunteers and generous donors.

While the majority of our clients are elderly, meals are available to all Long Beach area residents, regardless of age.

Our mission is to enable the chronically ill, seniors, veterans and disabled to remain independent & safe in their own homes for as long as possible.

Referrals are taken from doctors, hospital staff, social workers, ministers, clients, family or friends.

We serve Monday through Friday except major holidays.

Fee: $8.25 per day for two meals, a hot dinner, cold lunch, dessert and beverage.
Eligible clients pay a fee if they are able, and if not, under certain conditions may be subsidized through ongoing sponsorship programs.

Both meals are delivered by volunteers (a driver and a “Friendly Visitor”) between 10:30 am and 12:30 PM.

MOWLB needs your help to continue to reach as many of the homebound hungry & vulnerable people in our community as possible.

You can help by making a donation or volunteering a little of your time at one of our Long Beach site locations.

Our History

Meals on Wheels originated in England during World War II, when the women’s Volunteer Services were organized to help Civil Defense. The first successful program in the United States began in Philadelphia in 1954 and has spread throughout major cities in the United States.

Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) began as a pilot program and service project of Soroptimist International of Long Beach after many months of research and preparation. On March 1, 1971, MOWLB opened at the First Congregational Church in downtown Long Beach with ten clients. In 1972 MOWLB incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Because of the need for home delivered meals, the program grew rapidly and over the years has expanded throughout Long Beach, Signal Hill and Leisure World Seal Beach. Now over 400 clients are served in their homes daily.

MOWLB is a non-profit community service for persons unable to prepare adequate meals for themselves because of disability, age or chronic or temporary illness, thus assisting them to remain in their own homes. MOWLB provides home delivery of two nutritionally balanced meals per day at nominal cost and is available to all Long Beach, Signal Hill and Leisure World Seal Beach residents, regardless of age.

Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) is not associated with any other “Meals on Wheels” program and is not government funded. Eligible clients pay the nominal fee if they are able, and if not, under certain conditions may be subsidized through our generous donors.

MOWLB serves over 170,000 hot dinners and cold lunches annually with the support of over 360 dedicated volunteers.

Thank you to all our Foundation Supporters, Community Sponsors and Individuals whose generosity has helped those that are not able to help themselves.
